7 March 2007
A Day of Commemoration and Reconciliation for the 1994 Uprisings will be
held at the South African Broadcasting Commission (SABC) Exhibition Centre this
Sunday, 11 March 2007 from 10h00. Premier Edna Molewa is expected to deliver
her remarks at the Exhibition Centre on Sunday. At least 2 000 people will
attend the prayer service.
The event is to remember the fallen victims who were maimed and also those
who died at the hands of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) members who
entered areas of the then Bophuthatswana in 1994.
A gathering of a group of white supremacists clashed with security forces of
the then homeland where more than 60 people died. The day's programme will
include a church service followed by the laying of wreaths at the Bop Uprisings
Victims of 1994 at the Botanical Gardens. The commemorations are done in
infusing the spirit of Ubuntu and lie at the heart of the continued commitment
to the principle and practice of human solidarity. Media is invited to attend
this historical event.
