Abalone Clampdown
15 August 2007
The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism and the South African
Police Service (SAPS) Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption units arrested three
suspects, one of whom is a SAPS Inspector and another a reservist, during an
abalone bust yesterday, 14 August 2007.
The third suspect is a South African man residing in Hawston, Western Cape.
The arrest took place in Kraaifontein, Western Cape.
During this joint operation, 2 067 units of abalone were confiscated and two
vehicles seized. The suspects are expected to appear in the Bellville
Magistrate's Court.
The state is intending to oppose bail. "Government has no place for
criminals disguised as public servants who steal from its own people by
plundering our natural resources. Those public servants who think they can get
away with corrupt activities should think again. We will get you and put you
where you belong among the criminals," said Mava Scott, Head of Communications
at the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
