D Hanekom to attend Science Technology and Innovation Global Forum, 13
to 15 Feb

Science and Technology for sustainable development high on the
agenda at the World Bank Forum

7 February 2007

The South African delegation led by the Deputy Minister of Science and
Technology, Derek Hanekom, will attend the Science, Technology and Innovation
(STI) Global Forum hosted by the World Bank in Washington DC from 13 to 15
February 2007. The forum will be attended by top policy makers representing
government, civil society, the scientific community, bilateral donors and
multilateral development banks.

"The nature of science and technology is collaborative and in need of
constant discourse. This forum will give us an opportunity to share lessons
that have worked in our environment and also draw on experiences from our
international counterparts on how they have gone about building STI capacity to
reduce poverty," says Hanekom.

The objective of this forum is to discuss strategies, programmes, and
policies for building science, technology and innovation capacity in developing
countries for sustainable growth and poverty reduction.

In his presentation Deputy Minister Hanekom will highlight achievements made
in the field Science and Technology guided by the Research and Development
Strategy, which has provided an enabling environment and strategic direction
for the development of our country's science system.

The Forum will be organised around four thematic areas:

* reducing poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs):
the role of STI capacity building
* adding value to natural resource exports through STI capacity building
* latecomer strategies for catching up - linkage, leverage, learning, and STI
capacity building
* the role of research and development in the development process.
