A tragic car accident on the N12 â Christiana / Warrenton road - from
Johannesburg to Kimberley has left three offenders and one correctional
official dead and another official seriously injured today (4 December
2007).
It is reported that a truck towing another truck lost control after a tyre
burst and collided head-on with a Correctional Services vehicle transporting
offenders. Correctional Services was transporting three offenders from
Hennenman Correctional Centre in the Free State to Kimberley Correctional
Centre in the Northern Cape. Names of the deceased are withheld until their
next of kin have been informed. The injured official has been taken to
Kimberley hospital.
Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour expressed shock at the tragic
accident and the untimely deaths. He expressed condolences to the families of
the deceased who are being informed of the developments and also wished the
injured a speedy recovery.
