Complaints Directorate on shooting incident

Shooting incident

3 April 2009

On 29 May 2008 the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) was notified of
a shooting incident where Inspector Takalani Mashamba of South African Police
Services (SAPS) Banderlierkop in Limpopo shot and killed his wife Rudzani
Thelma Mashamba with his service pistol. It was alleged at the time that the
couple had been experiencing marital problems and this is what led to the
killing.

The deceased was shot in the face right at the doorstep of Makhado Police
Station where she had run for help. The ICD investigated the matter and is
proud to report that Inspector Takalani Mashamba has been found guilty on the
charge of murder and he was sentenced to life imprisonment today, 3 April 2009,
in the Polokwane High Court.

The ICD welcomes this harsh punishment and hopes that it will serve as a
deterrent to those members who resort to violence to resolve their domestic
problems.
