Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA)
issues an invitation to apply for Broadband Infraco

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has issued
an invitation to apply for Broadband Infraco (Pty) Ltd. The Information
Technology Association (ITA) follows the issuing of a policy directive by the
communications Minister, in terms of section 3(2) and 3(1A) of the Electronic
Communications Act (Act No.36 of 2005), on 6 February 2009 directing ICASA to
conduct the necessary processes to accept and consider applications for the
Electronic Communications Network Service (ECNS) and Electronic Communication
Service by Broadband Infraco (Pty) Ltd to amongst others, enable the state to
expand the availability and affordability of access to electronic
communications networks and services.

The application will have to be submitted by 20 April 2009 after which the
authority may decide to hold public hearings. In the event that the authority
decides to hold the hearings, such hearings will be held on 20 May 2009.

The authority will publish the application in the government gazette
inviting interested parties to make written submissions.
