the fight against cholera
27 March 2009
Limpopo Premier Mr Cassel Mathale has welcomed the recent progress
registered by the province in the fight against the cholera epidemic. The
province comes a long way in fighting the disease, which has already killed
about 25 patients and registered a record high of 5 414 cases since November
2008. âIn the last three weeks no cholera cases were reported in the province
and we are confident that this could be a sign that we have turned the tide in
the fight against this pandemicâ said Limpopo Premier Mr Cassel Mathale.
The Premier wishes to thank the Department of Health and Social Development
in the province for the able manner in which they addressed this challenge in
collaboration with municipalities and Non Government Organisation (NGO)âs like
the Red Cross. He also expressed his gratitude to nurses and doctors who worked
around the clock to ensure that patients were attended to.
âWe believe that the main reason we succeeded as a province in stemming the
tide against this epidemic, is because we placed more emphasis on personal
hygiene and individual responsibility, during our public health drive. We
regret the lives lost and wish to extend our sincere sympathies to members of
the bereaved familiesâ added Limpopo Premier.
