housing projects in Mkhondo Municipality
14 September 2007
The MEC for Local Government and Housing Candith Mashego-Dlamini has called
on housing authorities from the department and Mkhondo Municipality in Piet
Retief to speedily expedite housing delivery at the municipality. The MEC
visited incomplete, vandalised, abandoned and poorly built projects at the
municipality this week. Her visit is a series of many where the department will
engage with communities to address challenges facing housing delivery.
The community of Emaphepheni complained about lack of development, need for
the servicing of stands, inefficient councillors and ineptness of the
municipality in processing their needs. The MEC assured them that their
concerns will be taken up with the municipality and engage the relevant
contractors to expedite housing delivery in the area and surroundings.
The land at Emaphepheni near the Paper Manufacturing Company Mondi is under
claim and apparently the claimants are prepared to give it to the community.
MEC Mashego-Dlamini suggested that all stakeholders, namely the beneficiaries,
municipality, Land Claims Commission, claimants and the department have to meet
and address these challenges.
The department have, through the Community Development Workers (CDWs) in
various wards in this municipality, identified problems ranging from incomplete
projects to poor quality of workmanship. The ongoing visits are aimed at
identifying and addressing problems that hinder housing delivery. The next
visit will be to Pixley Ka Seme Municipality in Volkrust.
