Dugmore
27 August 2007
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has received an excellent
response to its latest advertisements for teachers in the province. At the
beginning of August we advertised 1 301 posts and indications are that we have
received between 25 000 and 30 000 applications, which is a record number of
applications.
Applications for the posts closed on Friday, 24 August 2007. Officials are
working overtime, including weekends, to process the applications to ensure
that the appointment process runs according to schedule. The advertising
process for the latest vacancies started on 27 June 2007 when the WCED opened
its electronic vacancy list for schools and other institutions.
We are currently running according to schedule, published in Circular Minute
2/2007.
We are grateful to schools for capturing vacancies on our online system on
time. Our challenge now is to meet the remaining deadlines so that we are well
prepared for next year.
Last year we received 25 550 applications for 2 130 posts advertised in the
second vacancy list for 2006. Although it still too early to give a final
total, indication is that we could well end up with about 30 000
applications.
In our first vacancy list earlier this year we advertised 1 191 posts, which
attracted 14 987 applications. The second vacancy list for the year normally
attracts more applications because teachers prefer to start new employment at
the beginning of the year.
We are now sorting and capturing the applications ands will send them to
schools by 19 September 2007. Schools will then shortlist and interview
candidates and must submit nominations to the WCED by 25 October 2007.
We appeal to schools to work with us to ensure that we stick to the schedule
so that we can approve nominations by 30 November 2007. We can then make
appointments in time from 1 January 2008.
We are currently on track for meeting our deadlines, and we have every
reason to be confident that staff establishments will be in place in good time
for the 2008 school year.
