Western Cape emerging farmers goes to Europe: Statement by
Cobus Dowry Minister for Agriculture in the Western Cape

27 February 2009

Tomorrow, 28 February 2009 at 15h30 I will be at the Cape Town International
Airport, to send off a group of emerging farmers and mentors on a visit to
Europe.

The Western Cape Department of Agriculture is taking these 10 emerging
farmers to Austria and Belgium from 28 February 2009 to 7 March 2009 as part of
our market access strategy for emerging farmers.

This is done through our collaboration with the South African Agri Academy
(SAAA). This is also a way of contributing to increase trade by 10% to 15% as
one of the priorities of Land and Agrarian Reform Project (LARP). The expected
outcome of the AgriMatch trip is to give the nominated participants opportunity
to:

* increase their knowledge of the supply and trade structures and business
practices in European Union (EU) markets,
* gain a better understanding of the logistical chain,
* gain a better understanding of the techniques of matching
their exportable products with the requirements of EU markets conventional and
organic,
* improve their skills, knowledge and experience in designing and implementing
their product specific export market plans,
* share their knowledge and experiences with those of colleagues/co-owners in
their respective businesses,
* enter into a contractual relationship with importers, buyers or retailers /
retailer foundations.

I want to invite you to join us at the International Departures Hall at Cape
Town International Airport at 15h00 tomorrow, 28 February 2009 when we send
this delegation to Europe.
