The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Buyelwa Sonjica will launch two
youth programmes in partnership with Anglo American and Xstrata. She will also
sign Memorandum of Understanding with Umsobomvu Youth Fund to assist youth in
Minerals and Energy who want to focus on entrepreneurial projects. This will
take place on Friday, 29 June 2007, Sammy Marks Square, Pretoria, at 09h00.
These programmes are government initiatives that are supported by industry to
intensify the participation of youth in the Minerals and Energy sector.
The Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) initiated projects and
programmes with a specific focus on Youth Development programmes in Partnership
with Youth in Energy and Mining (YEM) and industry, in response to the call by
the President in his State of the Nation Address. The target for the programme
is youth in all provinces of South Africa, who have interest in the Minerals
and Energy sectors, skills development, procurement, beneficiation, enterprise
development and small scale mining. Xstrata Mining has set aside R1 million for
skills development training programme. This programme will be launched on
Friday, 29 June 2007, in Pretoria.
