Deputy President to open the 8th Biannual World Conference of
the International Association of Refugee Law Judges (IARLJ), Table Bay Hotel,
Cape Town

Deputy President Baleka Mbete will on Wednesday, 28 January 2009, open the
8th Biannual World Conference of the International Association of Refugee Law
Judges (IARLJ). This is the first time that this conference is being held in
Africa.

The theme of the conference is “Where to now, charting the future course of
international protection”.

The goal of the conference is to bring together approximately 200 judges
from all over the world who are concerned with refugee law decision making and
by the contributions of the presenters and the interaction with the judges to
advance the jurisprudence of refugee law towards a common understanding
throughout the world.

The International Association for Refugee Law Judges is an association with
its central secretariat in Haarlem, the Netherlands. It has four chapters,
namely Europe, Australia/New Zealand, the Americas, and Africa. The association
has about 300 members from 60 countries, all of whom are judges or decision
makers in the area of refugee law.
