Hundreds of women lawyers will as of Monday, 30 July 2007 give free legal
advice to community members at designated places across the country. The week
long initiative is a partnership between the Department of Justice and
Constitutional Development and the South African Women Lawyers Association
(Sawla).
The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Brigitte Mabandla
will launch the Access to Justice Week on Monday, 30 July 2007 at Sammy Marks
Square, Pretoria Central at 09h00.
It is common knowledge that legal services remain inaccessible to many South
Africans, in particular the historically marginalised group for various
reasons, including, costs and proximity. The Sawla Access to Justice Week is a
community service initiative providing women lawyers with an opportunity to
plough back into their communities and accelerate Access to Justice.
The community service will be executed in the form of free legal advice and
assistance:
* the drafting of wills
* maintenance
* administration of estates
* child custody
* rights in marriage including customary marriage
* foster Parenting and Guardianship
* domestic violence
* National Credit Act.
The South African Women in Law Association was established in 2006 to
provide a dialogue and professional networking forum for women in legal
careers.
