the blind
5 March 2009
Gauteng Health MEC Brian Hlongwa will launch the rehabilitation services for
the blind and partially sighted people at the Tshwane Rehabilitation Centre on
Friday, 6 March 2009.
The Department of Health (DoH) estimated the prevalence of blindness in
South Africa at 0,75 percent, with the World Health Organisation (WHO)
estimating that there are approximately three people with low vision for every
blind people in Africa.
As this year masks 200 years since the birth of the founder of Braille, Mr
Louis Braille, the Gauteng Department of Health believes this historic launch
will breed positive outcomes in the lives of the blind and visually impaired
people in Gauteng.
Journalists are invited to attend the launch.
