KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki
Cele
robustly condemns the deadly shooting of three people at a Pietermaritzburg
taxi rank by unknown men early this morning, 19 February 2009

It is alleged that three people were inside a car when unknown men walked
by, shooting randomly and killing them instantly. No one has been arrested on
the shooting, however the South African Police Service (SAPS) is conducting an
intensive investigation on the matter. The motive at this stage is not known,
however, taxi violence has not been ruled out.

“We are deeply disturbed by such barbaric killings and strongly condemn it
in the strongest possible way. The SAPS will conduct an investigation to these
killings and those found to be on the wrong will face the full might of the law
furthermore our Public Transport Monitoring and Compliance (PTMC) unit and the
KwaZulu-Natal Taxi Council (KZNTC) will convene and try to get more facts that
might expedite the arrest of these ruthless perpetrators,” said Cele.
