MEC Cele to officially open P218 and P710

15 April 2009

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Bheki Cele
will officially open roads P218 and P710 at an event to be held at
Embongolwane, Endayini Ediphini starting at 9h00 on Thursday, 16 April
2009.

These two roads will enable improved access to the local medical facility,
Bongelwana Hospital and other local schools. This project benefited a lot of
local residents since unskilled labour and Vuk'uzakhe Contractors are sourced
from the local communities, resulting in 110 local jobs.

P218 and P710, whose phase one has been completed, will provide the local
community with an all weather link onto the existing P50 surfaced road in the
north and to Sundumbili in the south. They will also aid in the abstraction of
timber and sugar cane produced by local farmers in the area and also to the
timber and sugar mills located on the coast.

The project is a seven year plan and completion is anticipated in 2013 with
estimated cost of R105, 000,000.

The road will provide a link between the Drycut, Blaaubosch, Osizweni,
Eastborne Farm, Inverness, KwaMafahlawane, Naas Farm, Clere, KwaPhillip,
Springbok, Jokisi, Spookmill, Donka, Kint and Serru areas and its total length
is 27,5 km. The estimated cost for P296 is R135,9 million. About 958 (58617
person days) job opportunities were created during the construction of this
road. The local residents will benefit from this road as they will have easy
access to clinics, crèches, police stations and schools.

“Since our liberation in 1994 we as the government have been committed to
bettering the lives of the people, especially those who reside in rural areas.
Under the theme Imisebenz’iyabonakala, sibuyisela okwabantu kubantu, the
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport continues to defend the weak at all
levels of society,” said Cele.
