MEC Cele to officiate the opening of Mpembeni Bridge P432

1 April 2009

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele,
will officiate the opening of Mpembeni Bridge P432 at 09h00 near the Bridge on
Thursday, 2 April 2009 at Babanago.

The bridge is situated on main road P432, between main road P47 and Babanago
and is some 10km from the intersection with P47. Both approaches to the
Mpembeni River Bridge were washed away during a large storm in 2005 and the
direct road link between Ulundi and Babanago had been cut. The approaches to
the structure had been washed away fairly frequently during the lifetime of the
old bridge. This was because the bridge opening was basically inadequate for
the Mpembeni River. The construction of this bridge totals R4,8 million.

“The Department of Transport is more than dedicated not only with the
construction of infrastructure that will give access to economic growth but
also to impart skills and to more especially to create sustainable jobs for the
local people, especially in the rural areas. The department will continue with
it efforts to defend the weak at all levels of society,” said Cele.
