Bheki Cele launches cycling and pedestrian pavement in Pietermaritzburg

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Bheki Cele
will tomorrow, 26 October 2007 officiate the launch of a cycling and pedestrian
pavement in Pietermaritzburg at the Market Square Taxi Rank at 10h00.
The launch will form part of the department's effort to promote
non-motorised transport with the aim of trying to reduce traffic congestion
during peak hours as well as enhancing a healthy lifestyle.
The event will be attended by celebrities ranging from musicians to soccer
stars with the intention to encourage people to use the non-motorised mode of
transport. They will show this by taking part in a bicycle ride together with
Cele, Head of Transport Department Mr Chris Hlabisa, members of the Transport
Portfolio Committee and senior departmental officials.
The cycling session will commence at 08h00 from Edendale hospital to Market
Square where the main event will be hosted. MEC Cele is expected to hand over
bicycles to scholars, particularly those from rural schools. The Gagasi FM
morning crew will be broadcasting live from the event. "Our aim in encouraging
non-motorised modes of transport is to ensure that traffic congestion is
reduced drastically and also have an environmentally and a healthy society,"
said Cele.
