Crime Prevention Summit
18 May 2007
An integrated and multi-disciplined approach to the fight against crime.
The Department of Community Safety and Liaison will on 21 to 22 May 2007
host the Provincial Crime Prevention summit. This summit is a timeous response
to the call for an integrated approach to addressing crime made by
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Mr S Ndebele as well as Transport, Community Safety and
Liaison MEC Mr BH Cele.
The honourable Premier Mr S Ndebele stated in his State of the Province
Address that, "Before April we will convene a Provincial Summit on Crime. This
summit will encompass the participation of all role players and stakeholders
including the South African Police Service (SAPS), Safety and Security,
business and justice. The summit will create conditions for a seamless criminal
justice system plan to combat crime."
Among the delegates that will be attending are Deputy National Minister on
Safety and Security Ms Susan Shabangu with the Honourable Premier of
KwaZulu-Natal, Mr S Ndebele giving the keynote address.
Speakers from the SAPS, departments of Justice, Social Welfare, Correctional
Services, Public Prosecutions and Home Affairs have been invited to present
their three year plans to fight crime.
Other presenters include the Chamber of Business, Metro Police and a number
of non-governmental organisations.
One of the anticipated outcomes of the summit is the establishment of a
Provincial Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster (JCPS), to be chaired
by the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison. In his 2007/08 budget
speech the MEC stated that, "This cluster will ensure that strategic planners
in the Criminal Justice arena, who are from different spheres of government,
communicate and plan on common issues that affect our local communities."
The Provincial Crime Prevention summit will create a platform for
inter-agency co-operation, collaboration and commitment, hence, its theme is
"An Integrated Multi-disciplined Approach to the Fight against Crime."

Crime Prevention summit are as follows:
