MEC Cele to attend a memorial service of eleven people at
Mondlo, Vryheid

31 March 2009

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki
Cele will on Thursday, 2 April 2009, attend a memorial service of eleven people
killed in the horrible accident involving a minibus and four trucks that
occurred on Friday, 20 March 2009, at Greylingstad in Mpumalanga province. The
memorial service will commence at Mondlo Stadium at 09h00.

Preliminary reports reveal that the minibus was travelling from Gauteng to
Vryheid. It is alleged that the driver was attempting to overtake four trucks
that were in front of him. When he was about to overtake the fourth truck, a
BMW travelling on the opposite direction approached causing the minibus to
collide side by side with the fourth truck. It alleged that the minibus was
dragged by the truck and it ended underneath the truck with people entrapped.
Eleven people died on the scene including the driver and four were taken to the
nearest hospital in a critical condition.

"The dying of innocent people on public roads is becoming a frequent
occurrence and this is highly unacceptable. I urge all road users to be extra
careful when driving. However, my deepest condolences go to the families of the
deceased. May their souls rest in peace," said Cele.
