MEC Cele commends on the breakthrough in the late Amen
Mkhanyawo's murder investigation

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki
Cele has applauded the South African Police Service (SAPS) on the breakthrough
of arresting five suspects who were allegedly involved in killing Amen
Mkhanyawo and raping four victims last month.

According to preliminary reports, the arrest was made in the early hours of
today, 28 March 2009, after an intensive investigation. The five criminals were
allegedly involved in the series of criminal acts which involved rape,
kidnapping, attempted murder and murder at uMlazi section which resulted in the
brutal murder of Mkhanyawo.

When this arrest was made two pistils were recovered, four cell phones and
other goods believed to be the victims, were recovered. The suspects are facing
six charges including, house robbery (two counts), rape (four counts), murder,
attempted murder, indecent assault and abduction. The suspects will appear at
uMlazi Magistrate Court on Monday, 30 March 2009. The investigations are still
continuing and more arrests are expected.

"I would like to commend the SAPS on the job well done in catching these
hooligans, this breakthrough shows very clear that the SAPS are working
sleepless nights to ensure that criminals are caught and dealt with
accordingly. The police will continue with their efforts in ensuring that if
there are still more suspects at large, they will not escape the full might of
the law," said Cele.
