Don Mattera and Keorapetse Kgositsile to share a stage at a
public lecture

23 March 2009

Members of the media and the public are invited to a public lecture. As part
of its mandate to promote social cohesion and national identity, the Department
of Arts and Culture will conduct a series of lectures/conversation sessions on
literature-related issues across the country.

Two literary icons, Dr Don Mattera and Professor Keorapetse Kgositsile,
recipients of the Presidential Order of Ikhamanga for their outstanding
contribution to literature, will interact with the audience on issues affecting
youth in a democratic state. Dubbed Poetry, Memory and National Consciousness,
the discussion will address issues affecting youth in a democratic state and
draw parallels between literature and national consciousness.

Sandile Ngidi, a former journalist and editor of the Baoabab Literary
Journal, will facilitate the discussions. We believe that this is another
milestone as we consolidate democracy and work together to build our nation and
ensure that literature assumes its place in the national discourse.
