The honourable Deputy President of South Africa Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka
earlier yesterday officially opened the 4th World Congress of Rural Women
(WCRW), currently underway at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in
Durban, South Africa. The official opening marked the start of the three-day
World Congress which will end on Wednesday, 25 April. This comes after the Pre
African programme that was held from 19 to 21 April while the Civil Society
programme started on Sunday, 22 April 2007 and ending on Tuesday, 24 April
2007.
In her address, the South African Deputy President, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka
urged the congress to address serious issues affecting rural women and their
communities. According to her, the main challenges are 'Poverty and
Powerlessness' of women in the African continent and other countries. "The
congress has to come up with practical and specific ways of intervention to
deal with the poverty trap within which poor communities find themselves,"
said
Deputy President Mlambo-Ngcuka.
The over 2 000 delegates that attended the congress are from different
countries including Palestine, China and many others.
