South African Veterinary Services hosts Hong Kong
Authorities

23 January 2009

Since 19 January 2009 the Department of Agriculture through its directorate
Animal Health, is hosting a delegation of the Hong Kong Veterinary Services.
The purpose of this visit is to inspect South Africa for African horse sickness
controls and the quarantine measures for the exportation of horses directly to
Hong Kong. South Africa has been able to control the outbreak of the African
horse sickness in the controlled area of the Western Cape since 2004.

South Africa exports a number of horses from the Western Cape to the
European Union (EU) whereby countries such as Hong Kong are beneficiaries. Last
year 130 horses were exported to the EU. A number of these South African horses
have performed well in the international racing arena and other equestrian
sporting activities.

Should the outcome of this visit be positive, South African breeders, owners
and trainers will be able to export their horses directly to Hong Kong.
