Agriculture and Land Affairs to host 4th World Congress of Rural Women,
23 to 26 April

4th World Congress of Rural Women in South Africa

2 March 2007

The South African government under the leadership of the Ministry of
Agriculture and Land Affairs will host the 4th World Congress in Durban from 23
to 26 April 2007 at the International Convention Centre, in Durban.

The aim of the congress is to discuss universal and wide-ranging issues
confronting rural women today. The delegates will share concrete experiences of
successes in addressing challenges such as globalisation, sustainable
development (social, economic and environment) gender equality, food security
and related issues of access to land, water, finance, transport and roads,
rural housing, women's health and the impact of public policies on rural
women.

The hosting of the 4th World Congress of Rural Women in Africa was informed
by the resolutions of the 2002 Congress held in Spain when Ms Graca Machel
received the ceremonial bowl, marking acceptance for South Africa to host the
congress on behalf of Africa.

There will be parallel session of the civil society tent.

The congress will be preceded by the African Consultation of Rural Women
from 19-21 April at the same venue for the setting of the African position on
the congress.

Registration for the congress can be done through the congress's website,
http://www.4thworldcongressofruralwomen.co.za.
