National Conference, 12 Sept

Fawu Congress: Minister to deliver keynote address

10 September 2007

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana will on Wednesday, 12 September 2007
address the 114 000 member strong Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu)
Triennial National Conference which starts in Johannesburg tomorrow
(Tuesday).

During his address, Minister Mdladlana will focus on the general welfare and
working conditions of workers in the farming, forestry, fishing, food and
beverage sectors.

The Minister is on record as emphasising the critical role that these
sectors play in the livelihood of the society, including combating hunger and
malnutrition, thus ensuring food security for the poor. This is all amid
enormous day-to-day challenges that these workers face.

"It is difficult to regulate the conditions of employment and minimum wages
in some of these sectors, mainly because of the seasonality and accompanying
vulnerability of some of the activities being carried out," he has said, adding
that the situation makes it difficult for unions to organise members.

The congress has as its theme: 'The giant rises to organise farm, forestry,
fishing, food and beverages workers into Fawu'
