Prosecution is to be recommended against an employer who violated a
prohibition notice in Witbank Mpumalanga last week.
Agnes Moila, Mpumalanga Provincial Executive Manager confirmed that her
office was doing paper work in preparation for the possible prosecution of
Iconocom Construction boss, Dawie Roberts.
Moila said on 23 August, Iconocom Construction was inspected in Witbank as
part of the nationwide blitz. The employer was found to be in serious
contravention for failing to put safety measures in place.
"We issued him with a prohibition notice. However, he ignored this and had
instructed his workers to resume duties on Saturday when the Department of
Labour (DOL) inspectors will be 'off duty'."
"An inspector spotted that, work was going on despite the prohibition notice
being issued. Two workers got injured on Saturday, 25 August as a result. They
are now in hospital," she said.
Zolisa Sigabi, Spokesperson for the Department of Labour said: "Our
inspectors will stop at nothing in ensuring employers comply with the law. We
have actually decided to have inspectors follow up all prohibition cases even
over the weekends."
