A North West farmer has been given 20 days to submit proof that he has
ensured his employees for compensation of injuries and diseases and
unemployment as required by the Unemployment Insurance and Compensation of
Injuries and Diseases Acts.
Labour inspectors currently combing the farming sector for labour law
compliance in the Christiana Area, issued the ultimatum to the Fedelingfontein
farm owner today whom they found to be operating without proper documents.
This has prompted Labour Spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi to once again urge
workers to be alert and not undertake employment without proper procedures
being followed.
"Workers must realise that they hold the key to the protection of their
rights, and must complement the government's drive to root out unscrupulous
employers," she said.
She also urged workers to check their Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and
Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) registration status
with their nearest labour offices.
