The Johannesburg Labour Court has ordered two Kwik Spar employers in
Bloemfontein and a marketing company to pay back over R400 000 in outstanding
underpayments of its employee's salaries.
This follows a recommendation for prosecution by labour inspectors after the
employers failed to comply with the notices issued to them when the inspectors
found that the two retailers were not abiding by the Retail Sectoral
Determination's minimum wages as from 2003.
The court ruled that Meditas Kwik Spar must pay back R218 561,21 plus 25
percent interest due to his 35 employees while Fauna Kwik Spar must pay its 23
employees an outstanding amount of R217 850,21 plus 25 percent interest.
Meanwhile the court has also ordered Maximise Marketing and Development
(PTY) LTD to pay an employee R16 000 in two months outstanding salaries as well
as interest owed to him dating back to two years ago.
Failure to comply with the court order may lead to the attachment of their
properties by the sheriff of the court to settle each claim.
