Labour on bogus labour inspectors in Free State

Bogus labour inspectors in Free State

23 October 2007

The Department of Labour in the Free State has warned employers and members
of the public to be on the look-out for conmen pretending to be Commission for
Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) officials and offering to help
claimants.

This follows a complaint by a Welkom employer who claimed to have fallen
prey to the bogus officials. They apparently hang around in the waiting room of
the Department of Labour offices and after obtaining particulars of the
claimants' employers, proceed to the latter's residences and demand illegal
payments under various guises, including Unemployment Insurance registration
and employment contracts.

Any person in doubt or encountering suspicious activities is advised to
contact the nearest Labour Centre.
