Labour in agricultural blitz inspections

Farmers applauded for complying with the labour law

22 June 20077

Labour inspectors have applauded farmers in Bredasdorp, Cape Alghus region,
near Cape Town, for exceeding the prescribed minimum wage for farm workers and
for co-operation during the agricultural blitz inspections this week. The
Sectoral Determination for farm workers prescribes that workers are entitled to
a minimum wage of R1 041 per month in area A (urban) and R989 in Area B
(peri-urban/rural). The blitz inspections checked on compliance with the basic
conditions of employment for farm workers. A total of 20 farms have been
inspected thus far. The main contraventions by some farmers related to lack of
a contract of employment or failure to update it and outstanding pay slips.

Spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi said "it is commendable and encouraging for the
farming community of Bredasdorp to pay their workers above the minimum wage and
for being co-operative with the Labour inspectors. As a department we have
always maintained that the purpose of the inspections is to educate and raise
awareness and to assist employers to comply with the law." She further said
that those lagging behind should contact the department for assistance. The
blitz inspections will end today.
