The Western Cape has lost another gift to the nation in Percy Sonn. He will
never go down in history as a diplomat but will always be known as a man of
principle, whether in law, sport or politics. In each of those fields he has
made a significant contribution, raising to the finest human rights lawyer
under apartheid, an outstanding judge under democracy and President of the
International Cricket Council (ICC).
I have known Percy Sonn since the mid-1980s when, as a young activist in the
United Democratic Front (UDF) under the state of emergency, he was one of few
people who would open his house for the entire leadership of UDF to meet while
on the run from security police.
I last had the pleasure of hosting him and the International Executive of
ICC at Leeuwenhof just before departing for the World Cup. Not even a fatal
illness could dampen the spirit of Percy Sonn. He has played a fine innings and
he remains not out because we will forever be proud that such a colourful
person came from our province and rose to the highest ranks in the world.
On behalf of all citizens in the Western Cape, I express our condolences to
Sandra and all he leaves behind.
