Commission on Gender Equality on new commissioners

Commission on Gender Equality (CGE) ushers in new
commissioners

24 May 2007

Following their recent appointment by President Thabo Mbeki, a new corps of
commissioners has been placed on board. The incoming commissioners took their
oaths at a welcoming ceremony yesterday, 23 May 2007. The swearing-in was
officiated by Honourable Judge Fikile Bam, who also delivered the keynote
address.

"It has been a long way," said the CGE's current Chairperson Ms Joyce
Piliso-Seroke, whose overlapping term has provided for a smooth transition into
the new Commission.

"Now, with a full complement of the Commission," she continued, "we have
reached the end of a road that has ushered a new beginning for the CGE. Now the
work of the Commission on Gender Equality begins in earnest."

The new commissioners represent a wide spectrum of backgrounds and
experience. Their terms of appointment vary between five and four years, while
their duties are also to be divided between part time and full time.

In his keynote address Judge Bam said, "We believe that a structure such as
the Commission on Gender Equality, has its work cut out, in ensuring that
gender equality is taken as a central issue in the attaining the desired
society based on equality and all freedom." He further commented that Chapter 9
institutions, of which CGE is one, "are in fact distinct parts of a whole, each
forming an important part of a collective to fundamentally transform
society."
