The South Africa-Russia Business Forum will take place on the margins of ITEC and present its report to the Ministerial Plenary session on 21 November 2018.

The ITEC, co-chaired by Minister Sisulu and the Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Minister Dmitry Kobylkin, takes place within the context of the bilateral Agreement that was signed in 1999 and revived in 2002 to give impetus to the political commitment between the two countries to broaden and deepen their relations. These engagements are further guided by the Treaty of Friendship and Partnership signed in September 2006, as well as by the Declaration of Strategic Partnership signed in March 2013 in Durban, South Africa.

The ITEC forum is comprised of a number of sub-committees, amongst them the committees on Trade, Investment and Banking Co-operation; Mineral Resources; Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; Water Resources; Science, Technology and Space; Energy; Justice; and Higher Education.

During the 14th ITEC Session in South Africa, an assessment of progress was made and other new possible areas of co-operation were explored. Both sides noted the remarkable progress achieved by most Sub-Committees of ITEC and there was general consensus that the ITEC mechanism affords both sides a unique opportunity to enhance trade between the two countries.

The Ministers agreed that both sides should take stock of all Agreements/MoUs signed between the two countries and make an assessment of their relevance and progress on implementation. The Ministers further instructed that outstanding MoUs and Agreements should be prioritized and finalised to take forward the work of the ITEC. Two Agreements/MoUs on co-operation in the field of Agriculture and in the field of Water Resources, respectively, were signed on the margins of the BRICS Summit in July 2018.

Enquiries:
Ndivhuwo Mabaya
Cell: 083 645 7838
E-mail: MabayaN@dirco.gov.za

Event Category

Visits to foreign countries

Issued by

Department of International Relations and Cooperation

More from

Department of International Relations and Cooperation

Media advisories
Fri, 16 Nov 2018 08:31:49 +0000 lebang 784470 at https://www.gov.za https://www.gov.za/news/media-advisories/visits-foreign-countries/minister-lindiwe-sisulu-co-chairs-south-africa#comments Minister Siyabonga Cwele leads South Africans delegation at United Nation’s Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, 16 to 17 Sept https://www.gov.za/news/media-advisories/visits-foreign-countries/minister-siyabonga-cwele-leads-south-africans Minister Siyabonga Cwele leads South Africans delegation at United Nation’s Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, 16 to 17 Sept lebang Fri, 09/15/2017 - 12:59
15 Sep 2017

Minister Cwele attends United Nation’s Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development September meeting that seeks solutions to connect the people who are offline to the internet

The Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services Dr Siyabonga Cwele is leading the South Africans delegation at the 2017 United Nations’ Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development meeting that is scheduled to take place in New York on 16-17 September 2017.

Minister Cwele is participating at this conference after President Jacob Zuma approved South Africa’s continued participation - for another two years - at this global platform that seeks solutions to the development of an inclusive digital world. Minister Cwele is one of 52 global Broadband Commissioners that are drawn from leaders in government, business, academia, policy makers and international agencies.

The Commission discusses strategies of connecting the four billion people who are presently not connected to broadband or fast Internet, in a cost efficient manner. Most of the people who are offline live in developing countries, largely on the African continent. The Commission advocates for, amongst others, investment in the rollout of infrastructure to extend internet connectivity to underserved areas to limit new digital divides forming.

Minister Cwele is expected to participate at the Working Group on Education, Working Group on Vulnerable Groups and the Working Group on Technologies in Space and the Upper Atmosphere.

The United Nation has identified Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as a key facilitator in socio economic development and poverty reduction. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals include four that relate to ICTs. The attainment of these goals is linked to the universal and affordable access to broadband.

South Africa has developed policies that are aimed at creating an inclusive digital economy. The country is now implementing these policies and is seeking partnerships with other countries on the continent to help connect many Africans to the internet. Minister Cwele is expected to continue strengthening these partnerships and to focus on ICT and digital skills training on a large scale across the continent.

For media enquiries please contact:
Siya Qoza
Cell: 082 898 1657
E-mail: siya@dtps.gov.za

Event Category

Visits to foreign countries

Issued by

Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services

More from

Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services

Media advisories
Fri, 15 Sep 2017 10:59:45 +0000 lebang 773195 at https://www.gov.za https://www.gov.za/news/media-advisories/visits-foreign-countries/minister-siyabonga-cwele-leads-south-africans#comments Minister Siyabonga Cwele represents South Africa at the inauguration of President-elect of Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, 24 Nov https://www.gov.za/news/media-advisories/visits-foreign-countries/minister-siyabonga-cwele-represents-south-africa Minister Siyabonga Cwele represents South Africa at the inauguration of President-elect of Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, 24 Nov lebang Fri, 11/24/2017 -
