Gender Equality congratulates Banyana Banyana for winning COSAFA Cup

Gender Commission congratulates Banyana Banyana for winning COSAFA Cup for a record time.

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) wishes to congratulate Banyana Banyana for winning the COSAFA Cup for the record 7 times, equally for winning it unprecedent 4 times in a row. Similarly, the Commission calls upon the South African Football Association (SAFA) hierarchy under the leadership of Dr. Danny Jordaan to do right by Banyana Banyana.

On the 28th May 2019, the Commission applauded SAFA for offering Banyana Banyana performance bonuses equally for their male counterparts, however this was not enough as it was once off. The CGE believes now if SAFA is serious about closing the wage gap between Banyana Banyana and their counterparts, this is an opportune moment to do so. The Commission is calling for equal match fee for all senior national teams. This should also apply for in a win and draw situation.

South Africa is seen by many in the globe as a leader when it comes to transformative agenda and this gesture if implemented by SAFA can herald a new era in all sporting fronts. Other sporting codes will ultimately follow suit. It will also help the girls at the young age to dream big knowing that they can make a living out of their craft instead of getting stipends that cannot look after them once their short careers in sports has ended.

Banyana Banyana cannot continue to be crown jewel that forever bring joy to our country, yet when it comes to remunerations are nowhere near to their counterparts.

Congratulating Banyana Banyana, we believe is not enough as long as they are not given the same wages as their male counterparts. SAFA must explain to the country how this is going to be achieved with implementation plans.

“The Commission uphold the principle of equal pay and equal sponsorship”, said Ms Tamara Mathebula, the Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality. As per the CGE report “Gender transformation in South African Football” the Commission will continue to engage both SAFA and the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation in order to address the issue of wage gap in South African football.
