Western Cape on inauguration of new council of Heritage Western Cape

New Heritage Western Cape Council inaugurated by Premier Winde and Minister Marais   

Together with Premier Alan Winde, MEC Anroux Marais today officiated the inauguration of the new council of Heritage Western Cape. 

Heritage Western Cape is a provincial heritage resources authority. Established in January 2003, this public entity seeks to identify, protect and conserve the rich and diverse heritage resources of the Western Cape, including its landscapes, sites, artefacts, buildings and structures. 

The new council will be tasked with conserving heritage resources for generations to come, while at the same time encouraging a region and an economy with a modern future. By striking this balance, they will be able to protect our unique history, while allowing for vital new builds and upgrades which contribute towards job creation and economic growth in our region. 

The new members of the council inaugurated today include:

At the inauguration ceremony Premier Alan Winde said, “The new council and chair are all energetic and passionate and I look forward to seeing the work they do to preserve the unique selling points of the Western Cape while shaping the future blueprint of our province and cities. This council has an incredibly important role to play, as we work towards growing the economy and shaping the look and feel of our region as we grow in modernity while preserving our heritage”. 

Minister Marais said, “We look forward to establishing, strengthening and optimizing our future engagements with the new Heritage Western Cape Council and wish them well in exceeding the already high standard set for the conservation of our diverse heritage landscape, acknowledging national and international trends, while realising the importance of tourism and the construction industry within our economy. I also take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank the outgoing Council for executing their duties with the integrity, due diligence and sensitivity it required”.  

The Council’s term will officially commence on 1 November 2019 and end on 31 October 2022.
