Water and Sanitation urges residents  to stay away from the flooding rivers and dams

Northern Cape to benefit from heavy rains upstream

The Department of Water and Sanitation in the Northern Cape urges residents living along the Lower Vaal and Lower Orange River systems to stay away from the flooding rivers and dams to avoid being swept away by strong currents as more water is expected to make its way through the Northern Cape from upstream due to heavy rainfall.

The Vaal Dam is currently at 75.1% and rising, Bloemhof Dam is 107.3 %, Gariep Dam 102.1 % and spilling at an outflow of 714 m3/s. Vanderkloof Dam in the Northern Cape is 103.1% and spilling with an outflow of 733 m3/s.

In the Lower Orange River, as of 26 January 2021 the flows are as follows:

  • Flow at Katlani 747 m3
  • Flow at Prieska 732.4 m3/s
  • Flow at Upington 641.6 m3/s
  • Flow at Blouputs 280.9 m3/s
  • Flow at Sendelingsdrif 40 m3/s
