Water and Sanitation urges for continued sparing water use in Free State

Water storage stands at 96% in the Free State province

Free State water storage has slightly decreased from last week’s 96.4% to 96.0% this week. This is as a result of a shallow rainfalls experienced in most parts of the Province last week. Despite this positive increase of water levels, the Department of Water and Sanitation urges water users to continue to use water sparingly.

Water supply system in Bloemfontein consist of four dams supplying water to Mangaung and the surrounding areas. Rustfontein Dam is at 66.4%, a slight change from 67.5% last week. Groothoek Dam is at 89.6% currently, a drop from last week’s 90.0%.

The main heritage dams in the Free State are sitting over 50% mark, and this is a sign of relief to both agricultural sector and the surrounding areas that rely on major dams as source of water supply.

Krugersdrift Dam remains unchanged at 99.0%. Gariep Dam is sitting at 92.9%, a minor decrease from last week 93.7%. The dam with the longest dam-wall in the southern hemisphere, Vanderkloof Dam has decreased slightly from last week’s 93.75% to 92.9% capacity this week.

Fika Patso Dam in Phuthaditjhaba on Namahadi River is standing at 85.5% a drop from last week 86.8%.

South Africa remains a water scarce country, therefore water conservation efforts need to be heightened to save current water that we have. Water restrictions has to be obeyed in municipalities that are still finding themselves in distress.
