Water and Sanitation opens one sluice gate at Vaal Dam, 28 Dec

DWS to open one sluice gate at the Vaal Dam as it has breached the 100% mark

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) will open one sluice gates at the Vaal Dam on Tuesday, 28 December 2021. This is as the Dam has surpassed the 100% mark and recorded 107% this morning. The opening of the sluice gate follows consistent heavy rains over the last two weeks in the catchments supporting the Integrated Vaal River System and the Orange River.

The Department will continue monitoring the System and might open other sluice with time if the rains continue and the heavy inflows persist. It is important for all the farmers and other communities downstream of the dam to move their equipment away from the expected heavy flows, as well as ensuring that no one takes a chance to cross low-lying bridges that could be flooded.

Members of the media are invited as follows:
Date: Tuesday, 28 December 2021
Venue: Vaal Dam, Free State
Time: 10:00 am
