Treasury launches City Spatialised Economic Data Reports, 14 May

Media are invited to attend the launch of eight Metropolitan Municipality Spatialised Economic Data Reports based on the mining of anonymised tax data sources. The Director-General, Mr Dondo Mogajane and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) will address the launch. This is the first time this spatialised data is available in South Africa and filling a strategic gap that can inform better and more integrated metro planning and performance analysis.

National Treasury will partner with the HSRC to assist in the future mining of this data. This partnership aims to support evidence-based policy and research by the eight metropolitan municipalities, various departments within National Treasury as well as researchers.  The intention is to prepare panel data series that can be made easily accessible whilst still protecting the anonymity of the data.

Furthermore, the HSRC will build capacity for the sustainable mining of this data within National Treasury and the metros and will assist metros in integrating the spatialised tax data with other data sets in order to positively impact on sustainable city planning and investment.
