Tourism hosts International Tourist Guides’ Day celebrations, 12 and 13 Mar

International tourist guiding celebrations – Gauteng

The Department of Tourism, in collaboration with the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) will host the International Tourist Guides’ Day (ITG) celebrations at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg – Gauteng. 

Themed “Tourist Guides – Contributors to Sustainable Tourism and Jobs,” the ITG celebrations will take stock of the contribution of the Guiding Profession in creating sustainable tourism economies and jobs.

Programme highlights:

  • Overview on current state of guiding - Morongoe Ramphele, National Registrar of Tourist Guides
  • Promotion of guides around the world - Alushca Ritchie, President of WFTGA
  • The need for a skilled workforce - SAQA and CATHSSETA
  • Tackling safety and security - Col. Marakalla, SAPS
  • Promoting rural tourism - Thabo Matsafu, Deputy Director: Regional Tourism, GDED
  • The future is about seamless travel -   Prof Karen Harris, HOD: Historical and Heritage Studies, UP
  • The future is digital - Mmboneni Muofhe, Deputy Director-General for Technology Innovation, DST
  • Tourist guide success story   - Bulelani Futshane, 2019 Lilizela Winner— Best Culture Guide
