Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane discusses draft White Paper on Science, Technology and Innovation, 9 Nov

Summit to conclude inputs into new White Paper on Science, Technology

Preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution is at the heart of the Department of Science and Technology's new draft White Paper on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).

The Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, will be joined by business, labour, academia and other stakeholders to discuss the draft policy document on Friday, 9 November, at the University of Pretoria.

The 2018 South African Science, Technology and Innovation Summit comes after Cabinet approved the publication of the draft White Paper for public comments in September.

South Africa adopted the first White Paper on Science and Technology in 1996 and, despite good progress, the potential socio-economic benefits of STI are still not being taken full advantage of.  Furthermore, the world has changed significantly since the implementation of the 1996 document, and South Africa needed a revised document to prepare for the new technological age.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has therefore developed a new STI White Paper so that the country is able to respond fully to the coming global technological, demographic and environmental changes.

The media are invited to the opening session, as follows:

Date: Friday, 9 November 2018
Time: 09:00-10:15
Venue: Future Africa Conference Centre, University of Pretoria
