Free State Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation hosts Provincial schools summer trials, 19 to 20 Oct

Provincial schools summer trials (Sipho Mutsi Games)  

The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (DSACR) together with the Free State Department of Education in consultation with school sport structures and federations will host the Provincial Schools Summer Trials (also known as the Sipho Mutsi Games) which will select the Provincial Teams that will represent the Free State Province at the forthcoming National Schools Championships to be held in December 2018. These trials form part of a process were learners from district level are selected to form part of the provincial team. 

The National Schools Championships is the highest competition for schools from all the nine provinces in the country. It is at these championships that athletes will stand a chance to be eligible to be selected into the national federation teams to represent South Africa at an international level. Participating codes include Basketball, Cricket, Rugby 7s, Softball and Table Tennis.

The Provincial Schools Summer Trials will be held as follows: 
Date: 19 – 20 October 2018 
Time: 08H00 – 13H00 
Venue: Welkom & Odendaalsrus Rugby 7s – Griffons Rugby Stadium [19 Oct. 2018] Basketball (Boys) – Sipho Mutsi Indoor Sport Centre [20 Oct. 2018] Basketball (Girls) – Goldfields TVET College [20 Oct. 2018] Basketball SASA II – Goldfields TVET College [20 Oct. 2018] Cricket SASA II and Softball (Girls) – Kopano Indoor Sport Centre Table Tennis – Leboneng Special School [20 Oct. 2018] Softball (Boys) – Mohobo School [20 Oct. 2018]

Speaking about the importance of the Provincial Schools Summer Trials, the Free State MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Me Mathabo Leeto stated that, “These provincial trials create an opportunity for young Free State athletes to participate and excel in sport, both on and off the field of play. The national tournament seeks to address the barriers of entry into the codes previously dominated by one racial group and also creates an opportunity for young athletes to be identified and nurtured through the sport development continuum.”
