South Africa to host a regional conservation forum for Eastern and Southern Africa

South Africa, through the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) will host a three day Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) from 23 to 25 July 2019 in Johannesburg. Ministers responsible for environment from countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Mozambique and Kenya will attend the forum to be convened under the theme: “Securing a future for people and nature in Eastern and Southern Africa,” with an aim of consolidating a common agenda to position and safeguard the region’s long-term conservation interests while delivering results for people and nature. Over 150 representatives of governments, non-governmental organizations, private sector and local and indigenous group representatives are expected to attend the forum.

The forum will include an open dialogue on the 23rd July focusing on contemporary values of society and implications for conservation practice and sustainable use. The dialogue led by Ministers of Environment from various countries in East and Southern Africa, is expected to result in recommendations targeting regional and continental policy processes as well as IUCN’s Programme of work in the region for 2021-2024.
