Free State hosts Social Sector Summit, 14 to 15 Feb

Free State to host social sector summit

The Free State Provincial Government, through the Social Protection and Community Development Cluster, will host a two-day Provincial Sector Summit where over 300 participants from civil society organisations and social sector departments are expected to be in attendance.

The summit, which takes place on 14 February to 15 February 2019, will seek to improve the interface between the state and civil society and address the challenges that Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) face.

The interactive summit, to be held under the theme:  “Strengthening partnerships with the social sector towards poverty alleviation”, will reflect on a variety of issues and deliberate on the approach to the National Social Sector Summit, to be convened after the Provincial Sector Summits in the different provinces.

One hundred and twenty (120) Provincial Sector Summit participants will be nominated to represent the province at the National Social Sector Summit.

The content for the Provincial Social Sector Summit will be informed by the following framework:

  1. Mechanisms to expedite the full attainment of the resolutions of the 2012 National Social Sector Summit in the following areas:
  • Resource Mobilisation,
  • Fragmentation in the regulatory framework,
  • Transformation of the sector (accessibility of quality services and employment equity), and
  • Capacity support.
  1. Mechanisms to improve the interface between the Free State Provincial Government and Civil Society Organisations.
  1. Develop and agree on mechanisms to improve the interface between and beyond government to include the legislature, state-owned entities (SOEs), the judiciary, regulatory agencies and organs set up to promote democracy and civil society.

The Provincial Social Sector Summit will lay the basis for more responsive and effective collaboration to deliver on the promise of a better life for all South Africans, by ensuring that commitments are clear and precise, that they strengthen existing initiatives and develop new ones; and that they take into account the challenges faced by each Social Partner.
