Social Development briefs media and launches National Men’s Parliament, 18 to19 Nov

Social Development in conjunction with the Men’s Sector and SANAC to launch the National Men’s Parliament

The Department of Social Development, in partnership with the South African National Aids Council (SANAC) and the Men’s Sector - as part of the Takuwani Riime Men’s Movement, will be hosting South Africa’s inaugural National Men’s Parliament in Cape Town. This is in response to the scourge of gender-based violence in the country.

South Africa’s first National Men’s Parliament will take place in Parliament on 19 November 2018. Held under the theme, “Institutionalising a Responsive Men’s Movement”, the parliamentary sitting is being launched on a day which has been commemorated as International Men’s Day since 1992.

The National Men’s Parliament became an evident priority following the launch of the Men Championing Change campaign during the Men’s Summit held in KwaZulu-Natal in August 2018. The aim of the campaign and the summit was to gather men and the youth to discuss plans to eradicate gender-based violence.

The Men’s Summit initiated dialogues between men and young boys from all the nine provinces who form part of organisations and NPOs that seek to make a difference in their communities by leading by example.

The Summit was followed by separate provincial meetings and dialogues between men and young boys which resulted in a Boys’ Assembly held in Gauteng in October where the boys discussed issues that affect them and their communities.

During the National Men’s Parliament, provincial representatives will give feedback on the resolutions from their respective Provincial Men’s Parliament sittings which have been on-going since October 2018.

The Deputy Minister of the Department of Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu will be hosting a media briefing scheduled as follows:
