Transport Minister visits De Aar to roll out Shova Kalula bicycles
Transport Minister, Mr Fikile Mbalula together with the Premier of Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul will hand over Shova Kalula bicycles to five schools in De Aar on Monday, 24 February 2020.
The Shova Kalula bicycle programme is an initiative of the Department of Transport aimed at assisting learners walking long distances to school to access basic education.
The Department of Transport has distributed over 100 000 bicycles to learners throughout South Africa since inception of the programme in 2001.
Monwabisi High school will receive 35, Veritas High school 91, Willie Theron Primary 55, St John’s primary 25 and Orion High school 43 bicycles bringing the total number of bicycles to 249.
The overall number of bicyles to be given to the Northern Cape’s five regions is 500.
Learners will also benefit from school uniforms that will be provided by the Transport Minister.
Both the Minister and the Premier will be joined during the distribution of the bicycles and school uniforms by the MECs for Transport,
Safety and Liaison and Education in the Northern Cape Ms Nontobeko Vilakazi and Mr Mac Jack respectively.
Municipality Mayors, members of the school governing bodies, parents of the learners and educators will also form part of the event.
As part of the distribution of bicycles, the Minister and Premier as well as MECs will ride bicycles from Nonzwakazi Hall to Veritas High school.
