OECD Science, Technology and Innovation Outlook 2021: Times of Crisis and Opportunity
The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the Organisation for Economic Development and Cooperation (OECD) Science, Technology and Innovation Directorate will host a presentation on the latest insights into how science, technology and innovation (STI) systems have responded to the COVID-19 crisis, and the unprecedented mobilisation of research and innovation that the pandemic triggered.
The most recent OECD STI Outlook report provides new data across a range of science and innovation policy areas, and outlines steps that governments can take to strengthen their STI systems to address future environmental, health and economic crises.
STI systems have played a crucial role in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, from improving our understanding of the virus and its transmission, to developing hundreds of candidate vaccines within a remarkably short period of time. However, the pandemic has also exposed gaps that need to be filled in order to improve the resilience of STI systems and their preparedness for future crises.
The presentation of the report will be followed by a conversation with experts on the following key areas (Chapter 2, 5 and 8 of the attached report): Mobilising public research funding and infrastructures in times of crisis; Resolving global challenges and crises through international collaboration; and Governance of STI for crisis and recovery. There will then be a Q&A session for participants.
