SA Non-Proliferation Council to Host Outreach Programme in Kwazulu-Natal
The South African Council for Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) will host an education and outreach programme with the chemical-related industry at the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission in Durban on Friday, 13 March 2020 from 8h30.
The outreach programme intends to provide an understanding of South Africa’s obligations in terms of Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction legislation.
The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Fikile Majola says that the control of WMDs is globally pursued through international agreements relating to nuclear, chemical, biological weapons and their specific means of delivery, including the associated dual-use ramifications.
“It is the responsibility of the non-proliferation directorate, which is based at the dti, as the Secretariat to the Non-Proliferation Council, to conduct the outreach programme in the industry in order to ensure that the industry complies with the South Africa’s obligations in terms of the Chemical Weapons Convention,” says Majola.
He adds that the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction Act of 1993 dictates that all companies in possession of listed controlled missile, nuclear, technology, chemical and biological goods must register with the council. They require either import, export, transit or shipment permits from the council when trading in such goods and technology.
The outreach programme will include interactive discussions regarding latest developments in the non-proliferation control environment, South Africa’s non-proliferations international obligations and its impact on the industry. Information will also be showed on the work of the council and non-proliferation legislative requirements with emphasis on the need for compliance.
