Northern Cape Traffic and Road Safety embarks on Railway Level Crossing and Road Safety Awareness Campaigns

Northern Cape Traffic and Road Safety Officials embarking on Railway Level Crossing and Road Safety Awareness Campaigns

The Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison’s Road Safety and Law Enforcement officials embarked on a fruitful Railway Level Crossing and Road Safety Awareness Campaign in Upington.

The operations were held at the Oranjeweg Level Crossing in Rosedale in collaborations with the Rosedale SAPS in an effort to raise awareness on Railway Level Crossing and general Road Safety of all road users such as being visible, wearing a seatbelt and not using a cellphone while driving.

The operations further tackled the roadworthiness of the vehicles, checking of motor vehicle licences discs and driver’s documents including taxi operator permits.

During the awareness operations, 180 vehicles were stopped and checked and over 400 road users reached including motorists, commuters, children walking to school and locals going about their business.

Law Enforcement Officials issued two fines to motorists, for operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence, while the general behavior and level of compliance was encouraging.

Despite the fruitful operations and the general good behavior and compliance from road users, a major concern was the number of motorists yielding at the level crossing stop sign instead of stopping and only proceeding when it was safe to do so.

“Our major concern are motorists that we saw yielding at the level crossing stop sign instead of stopping, which means they do not give themselves sufficient time to observe if it is safe to cross before doing so,” said the Principal Road Safety Officer, Mr Wilfred Moller.

He said they will continue with their Road Safety initiatives and encourage all road users to observe the rules of the road and to take responsibility not only of their behavior on the roads but for the safety of others also.

Motorists said they always appreciate the awareness campaign and visibility as it makes them feel safe on the roads while pedestrians said they also appreciated the efforts as it helped remind motorists to observe them as road users.
